Town Square in Staszów Town Square in Staszów

The Renaissance town square has a roughly rectangular shape.

Two perpendicular streets extend from each corner of the square. The tenement houses in the square originate from the 18th century. Built by the then owner of Staszów, August Aleksander Czartoryski, the houses form a dense frontage development. Some buildings still have the characteristic arcade passageways.

In the north-easter part of the town square, you will find a statue of Tadeusz Kościuszko. Known among the locals for many years simply as “the statue”, it was altered and relocated multiple times throughout the years. It was erected in 1864 after the end of the January Uprising as the token of gratitude to Tsar Alexander II of Russia for the emancipation of the serfs. In 1917, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tadeusz Kościuszko’s death, the main plaque was removed and replaced with a medallion with Kościuszko’s face and an inscription to his honour.
